The Healthy Womans Handbook – 1st Edition – May 2025

The Healthy Womans Handbook – 1st Edition – May 2025

Summary

The Healthy Woman's Handbook 1st Edition (May 2025) is a 128-page guide covering the full female life span from puberty through menopause, with chapters on anatomy, hormones, fitness, nutrition, mental health, menstruation, contraception, pregnancy, sexual health, gynaecological cancers, and bone health. Published as a digital edition, it functions as a primer for women who want a single-volume reference on their own biology.

The handbook opens with female anatomy (p.8) and puberty (p.10), explaining the physical and emotional changes of adolescence. "A Guide to Essential Hormones" (p.16) maps oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle and life stages. "What Is Good Health?" (p.22) defines health beyond the absence of disease. Health conditions (p.28) covers PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid disease, and autoimmune disorders that disproportionately affect women. The fitness (p.34) and nutrition (p.40) chapters offer stage-of-life recommendations.

The handbook's second half covers menstrual cycle mechanics (p.50), contraception (p.60), conception (p.62), pregnancy (p.66), labour (p.72), and postpartum health (p.76). Sexual health (p.80) and intimacy (p.84) are followed by sections on female health concerns (p.88), gynaecological cancers (p.94), and bladder and bowel health (p.100). The final third covers breast health (p.104), common procedures (p.110), health screenings (p.114), inclusive healthcare (p.116), menopause (p.118), heart health post-menopause (p.124), bone and joint health (p.126), and dementia (p.128). Each chapter runs 4-6 pages — enough for orientation, not depth.

Content Guide

p.16 · A Guide to Essential Hormones
Explains oestrogen's role in bone density and cognitive function, progesterone's role in mood regulation, and testosterone's role in libido and muscle maintenance. A chart shows how ratios shift across the menstrual cycle. The chapter is useful for any woman whose doctor has dismissed hormonal symptoms as normal.

p.54 · A Guide to Periods
Covers what constitutes a normal cycle (21-35 days, 3-7 days of bleeding), what changes warrant medical investigation, and how to track cycles without an app. The chapter includes a pain-scale chart for distinguishing dysmenorrhoea from secondary causes. Teenagers and parents will find this the handbook's most practical chapter.

p.80 · Your Sexual Health
Reviews STI screening guidelines, lubrication options, and the pelvic floor's role in sexual function. The chapter recommends specific pelvic floor exercises with diagrams. Readers who have never had a sexual health conversation with their GP gain a checklist for the next appointment.

p.118 · Facing Menopause
Distinguishes perimenopause from menopause, lists vasomotor symptom management options, and compares hormone therapy types. A table shows relative risks of breast cancer and VTE for systemic versus local HT. Women approaching their 40s will find the preparation timeline useful.

p.126 · Bone & Joint Health
Explains why women lose bone density faster after menopause due to oestrogen decline, with calcium and vitamin D targets. The chapter recommends 1,200 mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D daily post-menopause. A simple 5-minute home balance test is included.

Editor's Take

This handbook covers all the right topics but at a depth that frustrates halfway through. It's ideal for a teenager or young adult who has never had a formal health education — the anatomy basics and period guide are clear enough to replace a classroom session. The weakness is that every topic stops at the introductory level: PCOS gets 2 paragraphs, endometriosis gets 1, and the inclusive healthcare section is barely a page. The pregnancy chapter is too brief to be useful for an expectant parent. The handbook competes with the same publisher's "Ultimate Health Guide for Women" (2nd Edition, May 2026), which covers identical ground with slightly better design. For a first purchase, choose the newer edition; for a library or classroom set, this remains functional.

Strengths
• Period guide is clear enough for a teenage reader
• Coverage spans the full female life span in one volume

Weaknesses
• Every topic stops at introductory-level depth
• Overlaps heavily with the publisher's newer 2nd Edition

Verdict: Selective read — A competent beginner's reference, but the newer 2nd Edition covers identical ground and should be preferred for any single purchase.
