Horse Hound – 15 January 2026

Summary
Olympic gold medallist Laura Tomlinson and Full Moon II front Horse & Hound 15 January 2026 (Volume CXLII Issue 2) under "Access All Areas," with the magazine's line "We put horses first" and her account of how she trains and cares for her star horses. Joss Ridley Photography took the cover.
Chloe Tinson of Barnwell Equestrian Centre in Cornwall is the issue's best news story: she reached 10,000 TikTok followers in three days, nearly 25,000 in five weeks, and raised around £750 to fund free riding lessons at her BHS and ABRS-approved family centre. BHS business support manager Sarah Dale called it great innovation.
Road safety carries the hard numbers: the DfT published its first new road safety strategy in over a decade on 7 January, while BHS figures show 18,683 horse-related road incidents reported from November 2010 to the end of 2024, causing 47 human deaths and 697 horse deaths. Hello Jefferson won the Doha CSI5* 1.60m grand prix with Scott Brash, and Diallo BB died suddenly on 6 January.

▸ News
p.4 · Using social media to offer free riding
Chloe Tinson runs Barnwell Equestrian Centre in Cornwall, a family business approved by the British Horse Society and the Association of British Riding Schools. After passing her BHS business manager exams she began posting videos, reaching 10,000 TikTok followers and monetising within three days, nearly 25,000 in five weeks, and by 12 January 14,000 on Instagram and 700 on YouTube. She has raised around £750 for free lessons, with viewers from Australia, the US, Sweden and Africa, and says: "It feels like free money I can use to do good." BHS business support manager Sarah Dale called it great innovation. Start one fundraising video for your own yard this month.
p.5 · Concerns as equestrian road safety debated by MPs
The DfT published its first new road safety strategy in more than ten years on 7 January, and BHS figures show 18,683 horse-related road incidents reported between November 2010 and the end of 2024, with 47 people and 697 horses killed. BHS safety manager Alan Hiscox called the strategy a first step but stressed horse and rider are inseparable in a collision. A debate on equestrian road safety was set for 14 January, and Mr Dillon's bill had its second reading on 16 January. Write to your MP about the 10mph passing rule before the next debate.
p.22 · In the spotlight — The Jukebox Man
The Jukebox Man, a King George VI hero, gets the spotlight treatment. National Hunt heroes carry the sport into a new year. Read the race form before the next King George.
▸ Horses in the News
Hello Jefferson — Doha grand prix win
Scott Brash and Hello Jefferson, the 17-year-old Olympic team showjumping gold medallist owned by Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham, won the Doha CSI5* 1.60m grand prix, reported at page 48. Older horses at the top of the sport are the exception worth following. Watch the Doha round and note how the horse saves itself.
Diallo BB — sudden death
Diallo BB, the 11-year-old rising star ridden by German Olympic dressage champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, died suddenly on 6 January. Sudden loss at 11 is the risk nobody insures against. Ask your vet what signs precede the conditions that kill quickly.
▸ Features and Regulars
p.26 · Deflecting disaster — How to prepare for extreme weather events
The vet clinic covers preparing for extreme weather, the third cover story. Storms arrive faster than most yards plan for. Write one weather plan with a named meeting point and keep it by the phone.
p.34 · Happy landings — Training horses to jump drop fences
The training feature covers drop fences, the fourth cover story. Drop fences change how a horse reads a landing. Walk one drop on foot before you ride it this season.
p.42 · 'The Heythrop was his life' — Alastair Jackson on Richard Sumner
Alastair Jackson remembers legendary huntsman Richard Sumner, who served the Heythrop for 28 seasons. Long service in one hunt is the measure of the job. Thank one person at your hunt who has served for decades.
p.58 · Goodnight — Tessa Waugh's hunting diary
Tessa Waugh closes the issue with her hunting diary, after reports from Bury Farm, Solihull RC, Onley Grounds, Kempton and North Cornwall point-to-point, where Tom Cannon and Edwardstone jump the last. Read her diary before planning a January meet.

Editor's Take
The road safety numbers make Horse & Hound 15 January 2026 important: 18,683 incidents, 47 people and 697 horses dead between November 2010 and the end of 2024, set against a strategy published on 7 January, is a case readers can take to an MP. Chloe Tinson funding free lessons at Barnwell through 25,000 TikTok followers and £750 is the best news story, and Laura Tomlinson's Access All Areas earns the cover. Weakest is the vet clinic on extreme weather, which the cover promises as a major preparation piece and delivers briefly. The Dengie and uvex advertising runs through. Buy this for the road safety and Tinson pages; the hunting and reports are for regulars.
Strengths
• Road safety gives 18,683 incidents and 697 horse deaths
• Tinson story gives follower counts and £750 raised
• Tomlinson cover interview is a named Olympic rider
• Drop fence training is usable this season
Weaknesses
• Extreme weather clinic is shorter than the cover promises
• Dengie and uvex advertising runs through
Verdict: Recommended — the road safety figures and Tinson story justify the issue.
